Why Kayak or Canoe Sail?

Once you experience the efficiency & power of a modern high-performance sail, you will be more excited than ever to be on the water.

Kayak sailing is undeniably a fantastic and enjoyable activity. When you talk with a kayak sailor you will learn there are many reasons that make kayak sailing worth while that beyond just having fun. Here is a list outlining a few reasons people who kayak sail say they love kayak sailing.

Here are some great reasons to love kayak sailing!

Kayak Sailing is amazing fun.

Once you have the efficiency & power of a modern high-performance sail, you will be more excited than ever to be on the water.   Raising your Falcon Sail instantly adds a new source of fun and excitement to your outings.

Rigging your kayak for a Falcon Sail, is the least expensive & least demanding way to experience owning a sailboat.  When you feel the momentum, it will put a smile on your face. You will have more enjoyment of paddling and the benefits of sailing.

A great quality sail will greatly add to the pleasure of kayaking.  The quality and performance of a Falcon Sail can be had for under 3.5 pounds total in a sail that can be raised on demand in seconds, lowered in seconds, and secured to your deck 100% out of the way in just a few more seconds.  All this in a kit that is expedition worthy and will last a lifetime.

Kayak Sailing allows you to go faster.

When your goal is to get somewhere fast, or keep up with someone who wants to paddle harder, or win a race, a Falcon Kayak Sail can make it happen. A Falcon Sail will never slow you down. If you want to go even faster and still have more exercise, you can paddle hard and sail at the same time for maximum power and speed. Or you can relax and let the wind do all the work.  If the wind is good, you will sail faster than any kayaker will go no matter how hard they paddle.  When you get someplace faster than everybody else, it comes with a sense of satisfaction. Adventure kayak races that allow sails are regularly won by paddlers who use a Falcon Sail.

Kayak Sailing allows you to go further.

When your goal is to go more miles, a quality sail is a perfect tool.  You can go further and relax along the way or continue to paddle or row as the sail pushes you along.  You do not need to have major adventure goals to use a Falcon Sail, but adventures who are looking for more miles and more options from an high performance expedition worthy sail choose Falcon Sails.  If you are looking for a small advantage on a local day trips a Falcon Sail will add to your accomplishments as well. You can go twice as far and have 4 times as much fun along the way.

In this video you can see 2 Falcon Kayak Sailors sailing to an Island and back on the same day for a 30 mile round trip.
They sailed in both directions. There is a lot of really nice education in this video as well.

There is nothing more relaxing than enjoying a sail.

Kick your feet up and just enjoy your time on the water as the wind pushes you along.  You can have the silence of sailing, and no paddling if you like.  Relax and enjoy the ride.  Beginners love a light breeze to a moderate level of wind. When you become comfortable with a blustery day, you can relax and enjoy a high speed zero paddling ride too.  Every paddler can find paddle sailing conditions that are a perfect match of their preference and ability. Even the macho thrill seekers enjoy rafting up with friends for a nice relaxing afternoon sail.

A kayak sail is great for saving your energy.

With Falcon Sail, kayak sailors can conserve energy on long outings and races.  You can relax and continue to make progress vs relaxing and making no progress. If you have a long paddle ahead, there is nothing better than utilizing a proper sail that can harness wind from a wide variety of angles like a Falcon Sail is capable of.  You can cover the same long distance as those without sails and still have energy for a nice hike after the paddle experience.

2 Long Distance Paddlers enjoying a advantage and fun from their Falcon Sails
A kayak sail will change the wind from foe to friend.

Once you have a quality modern sail at your disposal, you will look at wind differently.  Rather than the wind making you decide to stay home, you will start to look at wind as opportunity.  A windy day will become something you look forward to.  With a collapsible compact sail, you can look forward to more conditions. Now you can enjoy both windy days and like glass calm days. If there is a calm day you can lower your Falcon Sail and secure it to your deck, and if you have a nice surprise wind come up, you will be ready.

You can lower your Falcon Sail and secure it to your deck 100% out of the way in seconds, and you can 100% remove your Falcon Sail from your kayak in seconds as well. You can store it at home, or break it down into its small pieces and store it inside your kayak.

Lower your sail if there is too much wind or lower your sail if there is too little wind.
A Kayak Sail will make you 10x more visible.

When your sail is up, you are 10 times more visible that paddle craft without a sail. This is great for safety.  All Falcon Sails can be spotted and identified from over a mile away.  Our brighter sails can be seen miles away.

Your friends will spot you and your unique colors faster than ever before.  When you are trying to find someone or somebody is trying to find you, a kayak with a sail makes a huge difference! When a group of paddlers arrive, you will immediately see the paddlers with a sail.  You will always see paddlers with a sail first. Those with sails are always the first thing to be seen.

That uneasy feeling that comes from a concern a power boater may not see you, will be almost gone when you have a sail to raise.  Even if there is no wind and you are not sailing, your Falcon Sail is with you to raise / signal in seconds.  It is effectively a very large flag that you can present at the best angle for a power boater to see you.  With a flag you are at the mercy of the wind to control your presentation angle.  With a sail you can rotate it so it is directly facing those who you want to see it. It is an incredible signaling device.  It is common for power boaters to change course when they see you raise such a great and obvious signaling device. You will find your paddle only kayaking friends want to be close to you when there are power boats in the area.

You can see on the Falcon Sail designer we have many very bright colors, including Fluorescent Orange, Fluorescent Yellow and Hot Green for maximum brightness.  These colors can be seen from literally miles away.  Even our subdued colors like red, white, and blue will make you 10x more visible than those without sails.  Design your own color pattern on our webstore designer page.  You can go for super bright or moderate brightness or something a little more subtle.

In comparison, sometimes no sail paddlers hold their paddle in the air to increase the chances of being seen. A good size paddle blade is usually dark and under 500 square cm.  All Falcon Sails are a minimum of 10,000 square cm and is almost always in a bright color than a paddle. When your Falcon Sail is up, you are 10x more visible than you are without it, and you do not have to give up your paddle in your attempt to be seen. With a sail to make sure you are seen, you just hold your course and look confident. Keep paddling, as holding your course is a perfect way to signal your intent. So you can signal with your sail, continue to paddle / not give up your paddle, and signal your intent by not just floating there.

Kayak sailors say their concern and discomfort around power boats is near zero when they have their sail available for signaling.

If you happen to enjoy paddling in waves, you know kayaks are low profile and are easily hidden by waves.  A kayak with a sail being about 7x taller than a kayak without a sail, is at a massive visibility advantage that increases your comparative visibility advantage even more.

Kayak sails also make you more visible when you are on land.  They are a great signaling device for somebody to find you when your group does not know where you are or even if you landed. They are also great for helping your friends find you in campgrounds and parking lots.

They are great for being visible when pulling your kayak on a set of wheels when portaging near moving cars.  You and your kayak are 10x more visible with your sail up.  Your sail makes a huge difference, and you can have an additional benefit of free sail propulsion if the wind is right.  A good sail can give decent propulsion on many angles of attack.  There is always a good reason to leave your sail up.  The benefits of having a sail do not end just because you are near the water’s edge.

If you do not want to be seen, lower your sail and secure it to your deck out of the way in seconds.  You can pick less visible colors as well.

Kayak Sailing allows you to do other things without stopping.

When you are under sail propulsion, you can do things such as organizing your gear, look at a chart, check  your email, make a phone call, take a picture, have a drink, organize your deck, enjoy the scenery, cool down by keeping your hands in the water, talk on your radio, eat a granola bar, put on a hat, or just enjoy looking at your sail.

If you are one of those paddlers who likes to continually adjust everything but hesitate because you want to keep moving, a sail will open up the door to do endless organizing of your gear. When the wind is right, you can sail faster than even the strongest paddler in your group and still be getting things organized exactly as you like them.

When you are organizing and tidying your gear as a strong macho paddler struggles to keep up, it gives you one more reason to smile.  Or you can get ahead of the group and then temporarily lower your sail and do your thing. Or do your thing and raise the sail and catch up to the group by paddle sailing even faster.  Or invite your slower friend to raft up and hold on for the ride as they get organized and do their thing.

If you are looking for exciting rides a Falcon Sail will deliver every time the wind is up.

For those of you looking for relaxing rides a Falcon will deliver.  Some people are looking for excitement.  If you are in the later group, a solid sail that has been proven expedition worthy is the perfect tool. A sail amps up every outing.  If there is a light breeze, it will push you along nicely, if there is a moderate wind, it will push you really nice speed, and if there is big winds, our airfoil and solid rig will translate to more speed than you have ever paddled.

If there is a big wind, a Falcon Sail will push your outing to the next level every time.  At the same time, you can lower a Falcon Sail in seconds.  So, you can experiment with your comfort zone and then lower the sail if it delivers more than you are looking for.  And then raise it again when you are ready to give more excitement another try.  You can work with other power control options, such as releasing the sheet line, the boom vang line, outhaul line, or going for easier angles of attack.

Being able to raise your sail and lower your sail in seconds allows you to change the excitement level on demand.  Having all the proper sail lines gives you more on demand options that will allow you to learn about sailing and advance your sailing skills.  Having these tools allows you to dial up and down the excitement gives you the option to try something more exciting than ever and have a quick option to turn it off.  This opportunity to practice in exciting more often and be able to turn it down on demand is a great thrill seeking and skill building tool.

No matter what your goals are, a rig that is solid, reliable and capable is always desirable.

A kayak sail is great for fishing.

Having a silent on demand propulsion option is perfect for trolling.  A good quality sail is also a great tool for getting you to and from your favorite fishing hole.  Having an on-demand sail option is great for silently controlling your drift.

With a sail, you can go to locations that are farther away and enjoy the art and sport of sailing on your way to and or from your fishing spot.  You can organize gear as you are sailing to and from your fishing spot.  You can troll on your way to and from your fishing spot.  If you do not want to paddle, and want to drift to different spot, having a sail you can raise in seconds is an awesome tool.  Or you can plan to sail troll your favorite fishing grounds.

If you want to stop your drifting or stop trolling you can drop your Falcon Sail and secure it to your deck 100% out of the way in seconds. Or you can just lower your sail and let it stay where it falls on your deck.  All these options come without having to charge batteries and very few repairs as Falcon Sails are expedition worthy and are designed to last literally a lifetime.

As you Kayak Sail will learn how to sail & become a more capable conventional sailor.

With a proper well-made sail, you can learn how to sail. There is no easier way or less expensive way to experience sailing and learn the basics of sailing than putting a Falcon Sail on your kayak.  If you sail your kayak, you are a sailor.  If you sail a large sailboat or a 10-foot kayak with a quality sail, you are a sailor. If you sail your kayak, you will learn the basics faster. Even expert sailors learn new things when sailing a kayak. Falcon Sails are proper sails that allow you maximize the fun and advantages that come with sailing.

You can learn how to make progress on different angles of attack and learn how to balance your boat, so it has a neutral tendency and stays on course, how to trim your sails form maximu

wledge using the other lines when you want to go to the next level.

A well-made collapsible kayak sail can increase your safety.

Being 10x more visible alone is a major safety factor. You can spot a Falcon Sail from well over 1 mile away, and even 2 miles away with brighter colors.  Falcon Sails make you more visible to power boat operators, people there to help you and people you want to help!

Another safety factor is speed. Being able to return to safety faster is always a great option.  If the conditions are changing and you would like to get to shore in a hurry, you can get there faster with a good sail.

Having more power to tow or raft up to propel your friend who cannot paddle is a great safety feature as well.  Rafting up is just fun anyway.  Being able to make progress with an injury or broken paddle, or no paddle is a great safety tool.  Being able to make progress and still be able to communicate or plan is another great safety enhancer as well.

If the conditions or wind become too great, you can always lower a Falcon Sail in seconds and still have all the options a no sail paddler has as well.

A good quality sail looks great.

Falcon Sail’s top design priorities are performance, compactness, minimal weight, and maximum durability.  One of the great beauties of a Falcon Sail is they still look great even with appearances being a secondary priority.  The aerodynamic shape of the sail will catch your eye.  They just look fast.  Our high-quality proper weigh sail cloth has bright rich colors and a great finish add to the look.

All the color choices on our webstore lead to well-matched color combinations.  The quality of stitching and precision-made parts make them look great even when inspecting with a magnifying glass. The crispness and proper weight of our sail cloth with carefully sized carbon battens holds the sail upright and in a way that makes them always look great.  The shape, colors, finish, solid hardware and smart instructions lead to a rig that looks great from a distance and up close.

When the sail is full of air and properly trimmed, they look like a work of art.

Kayak Sailing allows you to do more and see more.

You can forget focusing on a straight-line route to make it to your destination.  You can go at your own pace and keep up with the group or do the longer paddles you always wanted to.  You can finish first, if you want to or take longer lines and enjoy the scenery up close.

You may find yourself checking your phone as you are making nice progress.  With a sail, chances are good,  you will be the last paddler off the water, because you will enjoy the ride even more. Even if you have a far-off destination, you can still take longer lines.  You can enjoy what you want to on the water longer rather than focus on the shortest direct route.

Making progress while relaxing and enjoying the wind changes everything.  Catching up to and then passing your paddle only friends will amuse you.  Or raft up with your friends and pull them along for a while.  You can relax and still keep up the pace.  Some routs you thought may be too far with paddle only kayaking, become easy and more fun with an efficient sail.

Kayak Sailing will make you a better / more capable kayaker.

It does not take much time to become comfortable with sailing in a light breeze.  Soon after you will find yourself going out and enjoying more wind.  Your skills will grow quickly.  You will react faster and learn how to manage forces you rarely experience without catching the wind.  The more wind, the more you will learn about bracing and ruddering with your paddle.  If you do this and push your kayak sailing limits, your non-sailing limits will increase even faster.

It’s just like learning how to catch a wave and surf.  When you learn how to catch a wave and become comfortable surfing waves your paddling skills naturally increase while you are having fun.

When you learn how to control and be comfortable paddle sailing in bigger wind, you are going to be a better paddler in all situations. There is no replacement for pushing your limits to advance your skills.  The beauty of having a Falcon Sail is, you can push yourself to your comfort zone limits, and then any time you like, drop your sail in seconds to go back to no sail paddling.  This is like being able to put your training wheels back on any time you like. With a good quality sail you will have more opportunities to push your limits and then go back to easy mode on demand any time you like.

You will also be more in tune with how wind affects your movement and be aware of how to deal with it with paddle strokes.  You will learn how to stay up wind and avoid finding yourself down wind of your destination.  As a kayak sailor, you have a skill and comfort advantage when the wind is up, when your sail is up or your sail is down.

A kayak sail can entice you to get more exercise.

A kayak sail is great for relaxing on the water and using less energy.  The thrill and pleasure of kayak sailing lead most people to do more kayaking and look for more conditions and more distance.

Here is why it happens.
#1 The excitement and pleasure of paddle sailing leads to more outings.
#2 The pleasure of paddle sailing leads to longer outings.
#3 The pleasure of paddle sailing leads to a lot more experimentation.
#4 the fun of kayak sailing often leads to paddlers paddling straight up wind to get to the next set of open water for even better sailing conditions and new horizons.
#5 As you are learning and striving to do more, you will be enticed to use your paddle strength to control  your rig and make things happen faster.

When paddling with a mixed group of non-sailors and kayak sailors, you are likely to find that you are one of the last ones off the water.  That is what happens because you will have more fun.

Having a kayak sail option opens the door to more experimentation, more fun and more excitement.  A paddle sailor can cover the same ground faster with less energy, be off the water and be more relaxed than the no-sail paddlers, but the joy and excitement of sailing typically leads to longer paddles, more paddles, longer lines, and bigger workouts.  It is just more fun and exciting, which makes you more likely to put in more effort. With all those benefits, you can always change your goal to using your sail to exert less energy and get to your destination faster.  Now you have a motivator to get more exercise and a choice to relax more if you like.

Paddle sailing leads to a more diverse workout than just paddling.

You can use your sail to relax.  On the other hand, when you decide to push sailing a little harder, you will use more muscle groups than you do with paddle only kayaking. You will engage numerous additional muscle groups as you advance your sailing adventures.  When you become proficient with sailing, you will lean forward and aft to trim your boats’ tendency to turn up wind and down wind.  You will lean upwind to counterbalance the healing tendency of your kayak. You will twist your body as you use your weight balance and your torso to adjust the angle of your kayak in the water.  As you are learning to finesse your sail for control, you may decide to occasionally use more aggressive paddle strokes.

Though you can achieve your goals with finesse, you can use power paddle strokes to get the job done as well.  But don’t worry, on a light to moderate wind day you can just sit and relax and enjoy easy sail propulsion. As your skills advance you will find yourself relaxing in more advanced conditions. As your skills grow, you may find yourself looking for more challenges and the more diverse workouts that come with those pursuits.

Or you can find yourself choosing easy and relaxing lines.  If you are not ready for the conditions you are in, you can lower your Falcon Sail and secure it to your deck in seconds for no sail paddling any time you like.

Kayak Sailing will get you a lot of attention.

Falcon Sails stand out in a crowd. When you land on the beach it is common to have people approach and ask questions. Kayaks always draw attention at the beach.  Your kayaking associates who are interested in kayak sailing will find you.  When you add a sail, you will have more opportunities to make friends than ever before.  And of course, you can always lower your Falcon Sail and secure it to your deck and go into no sail incognito mode any time you like as well.

Kayak Sailing is a great way to raise the eyebrows.

A sail can lead to some interesting and fun banter situations with your traditional & closed-minded paddle only kayakers. They will tell you that is cheating and try to convince themselves they are better kayakers and will continue to be better kayakers because they do not have a sail.  You can just sit back and say, we will see.

When you hit the water with them and take 1 paddle stroke every so often as they are paddling hard and breathing heavy, you can smile as they still claim to enjoy not having a sail.  Some will say the just like to paddle, you can say, you can paddle as hard as you want with a sail or you can lower your sail in seconds and skip the sailing fun any time you like.

Part of what attracts paddlers to the sport is our independent nature. Putting a sail on your boat is a harmless and at times an amusing way to stand out amongst the self-styled “purist” paddlers and macho paddlers.  When somebody says “you’re cheating” you can just smile as you know you have something really cool that t//hat do not have.  Some people are too self-conscious to do something different, but you can enjoy as they look on.  When the wind is up and you are smiling and only thinking about sailing, they will be a little jealous.

Some group leaders require a sail for some kayak & canoe trips.

This is not unusual in Australia, New Zealand and the inland seas known as the Great Lakes.  On the other hand, when there is a group without any sailors, nobody will ever say you cannot go because you have a ready-to-go sail that does not get in the way or slow you down. When a tool is only an advantage, it is a good thing.   An efficient reliable sail will open up doors and allow a group to do more.  Having a sail option never hurts, even if you are the only one with a sail.  But if you are the only one in a group without a sail, it can be a problem.  You will much prefer being the only person in  your group with a sail.

With a collapsible sail you can have the best of no sail paddling & paddle sailing.

Paddle sail with your paddle sailing friends and paddle only if there is no wind or you do not want to sail. You can lower a Falcon Sail and secure it to your deck 100% out of the way in seconds for a 100% normal no sail paddling experience.  If your sail does not have a lower and raise on demand capability like a Falcon Sail has, when there is no wind, or there is too much wind, a sail can slow you down and make it difficult to paddle with no sail paddlers.
With a Falcon Sail you can have the best of both worlds.  You will have sailing on demand and 100% normal paddle only kayaking on demand as well.  With a Falcon Sail you can have the best of both worlds and use it to always be compatible with your sailing friends and no sail friends.

Or you can raise your sail when with your no sail friends and have more fun they are. Why not.  You will not slow them down.  They will just be a little jealous.  Or you can raft up and pull them along with you.

Kayak Sailing makes kayak surfing easier & even more fun.

Do you like to surf waves while paddling?  Do you feel like you can always have more? Just like wind surfing adds a major dimension to surfing, a kayak sail adds a major dimension to surfing waves.   A sail can push you to where the waves are.  You will catch more waves with less effort, and stay on waves way longer if you have a well-made sail.   Even if you are not into surfing waves in your kayak, on occasion with your sail a wave will catch you, and you will enjoy the extra long surge in speed.

Kayak Sailing is a fun and growing trend.

If you like being one of those people who enjoys being the first to do something new in your group, a sail on your kayak is perfect.  There are new kayak sailors every day and you can be one of them !

Portaging & landing – more free propulsion & more visibility for more safety.

When your kayak is on wheels, and the sail is up, it actually provides more propulsion than when you are on the water because the lateral resistance on wheels is nearly perfect.   If you have a long portage or an uphill portage, you will appreciate the push your sail gives.  When the wind is at a working angle, it works great. When your kayak is on wheels, your sail will give propulsion on 270 out of 360 degrees.  If the wind is good, the propulsion is significant.

The advantages of sail propulsion extend through landing & following activities on land.   When you land and need to drag your boat onto the beach you will appreciate a free propulsion from your sail.  Even on land do not lower your sail if it is pushing your kayak where you want it to go.  Your sail can help push your kayak onto the beach.

Your Falcon rig is strong enough to grab the mast at the junction ring and drag your kayak further onto land as well. Now you can grab your mast 2 feet off the ground vs bending down to drag your kayak with the bow toggle one more time. It is another handy option. This option is really handy when you are dragging yourself and your kayak onto the beach after a long day.  The Falcon Sail rig is expedition worthy.

It is convenient to grab the mast and avoid bending over. The sail propulsion is noticeable and appreciated. You can take advantage of every bit of free propulsion.  We do not recommend dragging a fully loaded kayak on the beach this way, but Falcon Sails testers do it all the time to try and find breaking points.  Nothing has ever broken when we do this but dragging a 60-pound boat with 60 pounds of gear, after a rough landing should be reserved just for testing.

Last but not least, the sail is amazingly visible, which is a very good thing when you are on a road or in a parking lot.  When you are walking your kayak down the road the visibility will make you safer and the propulsion will make you more energetic.

Reduce strain on your shoulders and other joints.

When a sail is providing free propulsion, there is less strain on your shoulders and other joints as you paddle with less resistance.  Low resistance paddle strokes are amazing therapy for sore muscles and joints.  Low resistance paddle strokes not only reduces strain but is therapeutic.  Often physical therapist use low resistance exercises as therapy.  You can provide therapy for sore joints and still be on the water.  Kayak sailors have reported long distance downwind paddle sails having a great positive impact on shoulder discomfort.

A mast and boom is perfect for drying your gear.

Your mast and boom are a convenient place to hang your gear for drying.  It will keep your gear off the ground where it will dry and in a place, where you will not forget it.

A sail is great for participating in organized races that allow sails.

Many adventure races allow kayaks to have sails. If you do not have a sail when participating in a race that allow sails, you are at a unnecessary disadvantage. The Falcon 1.1 square meter sail is designed specifically to comply with the rules of common adventure races such as the Everglades Challenge and the Florida Ultimate Challenge. Falcon Sails has been on more winners’ podiums than any sail on the market.

Competition.

Most sailors quietly think of every encounter is a mini race.  Being competitive about who goes faster and who goes more upwind is part of the fun. All sailors take notice of who is going faster and who can point upwind better. Or you can make a friendly bet on who will get to the next beach first or just enjoy getting there first.

Both kayakers and sailors the the same way in situations like this. Everybody always notices who is at the beach first. Everybody would like to be able to be first, but most people are not willing to sweat to make it happen.  When you beat the “hard core” paddlers as they paddle their brains out, with your moderate effort, it will put a smile on your face.

Kayak sailing gives those never-ending tinkerers something else to do.

Kayak sailing is simplistic and with a quality complete kit sails are fast and easy to set up.  With one weekend of kayak sailing, you will master the majority of the benefits kayak has to offer.

If you want to squeeze more out of having a sail on your kayak, you can refine and tune your rigging and work on refining your technique. It’s just like sailing on any sailboat. The most experienced sailors go a little faster and those who have tweaked their rigs get a little more out of their sails.

It’s very satisfying to use your brain and skills to go faster and further!   If you like to work smarter and not harder a Falcon Sail can help you do this.  Tune your rig to perfection and get even more out of the wind and your sailing skills.  Or just naturally learn as you go and skip the finer details of sailing.

A well made sail reduces the chance of becoming board.

Paddle sailing is a great way to increase your enjoyment in your short term and long-term kayaking experiences. Sailing adds a whole new realm to kayaking. You will look at every place you paddle in a new way. Even though kayak sailors can go much faster than paddle only kayakers, they regularly are the last ones off the water because paddle sailing just so much more fun than paddle only kayaking.  Kayak sailing is just more interesting than paddle only kayaking.
